How to formulate a family emergency plan for natural and man-made disasters

There is no such thing as being too prepared!

When you decided to take in a pet you took on the responsibility to care for the well-being and care for this animal for its lifetime, no matter what hazards get in the way. At Wag'N Enterprises we take and recommend an all-hazards approach to preparedness as the basics remain the same regardless of the nature of the emergency. You are your pet’s 911! They depend on you and your thumbs to keep them safe and healthy. See Dog’s Plea

COUPLE OF FACTOIDS

· * You are more likely to panic if you don’t have a few good rehearsed plans. Screaming and utter panic does not extinguish fires, stop earthquakes, etc. You need to remain calm and collected. Pets pick up on your stress and should they be injured make the medical condition worse was increasing blood pressure.

• Bad things happen to good people, so yes it can happen to you and your pet(s).
• Plan A does not generally work out. Don’t sell your soul to that plan. Have good contingencies ready.
• Any rehearsed plan is better than any theoretical plan.

ALWAYS: Pets should wear a collar with its regular identification, county license, microchip and rabies tag at all times. Update microchip information when you move, change phone numbers, get new job or anytime your contact information changes.

No matter what the nature of the emergency, pet parents will always need to consider 7 essential concepts. We all need:

SECURITY

Generally shelter from the elements and other hazards (including wildlife and other people)

* Make sure the scene you are in is less stable than the scene you are going to escape to before you make your move. If not, shelter in place.
* How you will protect yourself, your family, your pets and property against the element and others once you have evacuated or once you emerge from your shelter-in-place location.

A DESTINATION

Even if it’s your safe room you need to get there and have it established as the go to place. Also know in which instance to select that safe room or another location

* Known Out-of-Town Location
- Make sure OUT OF TOWN CONTACT 1 can and will accept and accommodate you and your pets
- You have OUT OF TOWN CONTACT 1 contact information readily available at all times
- OUT OF TOWN CONTACT 1 is not in the path of whatever disaster is striking your area
- You have a backup to OUT OF TOWN CONTACT 1. Who know OUT OF TOWN CONTACT 2 maybe better prepared, available and on higher grounds!

* On The Fly
- Now make sure you scope out pet friendly hotels along your evacuation route.
- Not all shelters accept pets. Those shelters that do require vaccination records and proof of ownership.

TRANSPORTATION

* Your Own (like secondary residence or camping site)
- Make sure you always keep your gas tank half full…always…like at all times. The lines at the gas station after an emergency is declared…fuzzy & mega busy. Evacuation routes slow and mostly gas guzzlers.
- Make sure you check your tires and the spare. Enough air I hear helps you get further. Keep a car safety kit if you get stranded in the winter time.
- Do not overload your car. Seriously. It’s an emergency. As a general rule of thumb Go-Bags should not have wheels and weigh more than what you can carry. It’s a GO BAG. NOT A SIT-IN & GET COMFY BAG!

* Friends/Family/Neighbors
- When everything is fine planning is easy. Remember that your neighbors, friends etc are people too and that they certainly have a list of things they want to include. You would be a guest in their vehicle - assuming they wait for you and/or that you make the rendezvous point on time – so now is a good time to determine how much of your stuff they can accommodate.
- If you are THE DRIVER or what we like to call THE PLAN then remember others are counting on you. Reassess your list of essentials and let them know what is permissible to bring along. Practice now to ensure it all fits and all people and pets get along. If you don’t practice this now, there will be a very rude awakening during the emergency when tensions already run high.
- Pet owners should keep a list of all their emergency contacts’ (friends, neighbors or family members) contact information and pre-printed copies of lost pet posters readily available in their grab and go bag. The Wag’N Rover Respond’R is another valuable tool pet owners should use to keep important information handy in their vehicles as well.

* Communal/Public Transportation
- Most of them do not accept pets that cannot fit on your lap inside their crate. If you have more than 1 pet or the one would crush your lap in bus, make other arrangements now. Start the discussion.

COMMUNICATION

* Family: You and your family should plan how you will contact each other if you are not together when disaster strikes/Zombies attack. Don't rely exclusively on cellular telephones since they usually work intermittently following a disaster. Landlines are you best bet. During the August 23rd East Coast Earthquake first responders and emergency managers asked the public to not flood cell phone towers with unnecessary calls. Text, Twit or Facebook instead as real emergency calls may not make it through. Discussing Fido’s feelings after an event is not crucial and can wait or be shared through other means. Someone out of town may be more easily able to communicate among separated family members.
Your plan should include designating at least 1emergency contact person who lives out of town. Not just in the next zip code! Have at least 1 person you trust that lives within a 100 miles radius and that you know how to get in touch with, how to get there and that will accept you AND your pets.

* Emergency Contact: That person does not have to be near you. It could be Aunt Anna 100 miles away who is always watching TV and lives at home glued to phone. She would be a great emergency contact because she both lives out of town and is available. She can become your dispatch of sorts. Everyone in your family can send in a status report and she can coordinate activities and remind you of your option, tell you what is being reported road closure wise. Landline calls out of town are more likely to make it thank local and cell calls. Of course she cannot be a manic zombie, so select wisely!

* Medical: Know where your nearest hospital is, how to get there and keep hospitals and emergency vet clinics marked on your evacuation route map (yeah that paper think). Keep the contact information of your primary care physician, veterinarian, emergency vet, poison control (1-800-222-1222) and ASPCA Poison Control (1-888-426-4435/$65 fee) on paper and electronically at home, in your car and in your go bag.

ESSENTIALS

* Food & Water
- Water for 7 days. That is 1 gallon of water per person per day minimum. Water can be used for drinking, sanitation, cleaning, cooking, medical, cooling down engine, etc. Too heavy? Consider water purification tablets and camping equipment to filter and boil water found on the go. For pets add 2 quarts per day per pet.
- Food for 7 days. Make that non-perishable food please. Technology is tricky. For those of you that feed RAW consider adding Dehydrated or Freeze Dried brands to your pets food now so their system can get used to it and keep a large bag of that food in your GO BAG. The emergency is really a bad time to find out that Fido gets raging diarrhea at Aunt Judy’s because he had never had this food before. Even worse when at a collocation shelter!
... We recommended dog food and cat food brands such as Grandma Lucy's Grain-Free Freeze Dried ; K9 Natural Freeze-Dried Dog Food; Wysong Canine & Feline Diet Archetype Freeze Dried Food; Paw Naturaw Raw Freeze Dried Food; Grandma Lucys Pureformance Diet; etc.
... The benefits of those are that you can get a lot of food that won’t weigh you down and has a very long shelf life. The downside is you need more water. So plan for it and get your pet digestive system used to it now! No matter what always include food you pet is used to in order to maintain health and diminish stress and sanitation issues.

* Medication
- Yours and your pets of course. When you prepare the Go Bag keep a Go Bag Calendar to make notes of when things were placed inside and when they expire. Unless you are planning on using the go bag as a weapon against Big Foot…pack it so it does not kill you!
- Place meds in Ziploc bags and label each so others can help you and not get things messed up and confused.
- Human & Pet First Aid Kit. Get the right tool to stop the bleeding, respond to poisoning emergencies. At a minimum get some instructions. Cuts & Booboos are bound to happen. Preferred tools & references: Wag’N Pet First Aid Bandana, The Safe Dog Handbook, Pet & Home Emergency Pocket Guides, Veterinary Disaster Response (the ultimate comprehensive guide).
- Skill: Know the skills of first aid and CPR for all members of your family. Learn how to manage chocking, revive non-breathing creatures, bandage wounds, etc. Find a PetTech Instructor in your area now. Recertify through Red Cross or American Heart for the human components.
- Proof of your identity. Proof of pet ownership included.
- To keep the confusion to a minimum get your pets’ immunization records and proof of ownership in multiple copies, updated often in your Go Bag. Most important is picture of you and your pet(s). That is every family member that can physically care for the animal(s), and are considered owners on that picture. This ensures all these people can claim ownership at a shelter or care for animal at a collocation shelter if they are recognized as owners.
- Pet owners should carry a record of their pet’s medical history, a photo of their pet and emergency contact numbers (veterinarian, local animal control, etc.). A Wag’N Pet Passport is a good solution to put all information together in one place.
- Of course keeping records of your social security card, copies of mortgages, loans, deeds, insurance, medical records, birth certificates, passports, driver’s license, family and house content pictures, etc in your Go Bag & in a safety deposit box is always a safer bet should you need to file claims or need to prove your identity to authorities, insurance companies, etc

SHELTER

This selection should vary depending on the nature and scale of the emergency. Either way plan for all and go back to Transportation, keeping paper maps in the car to find alternate routes. Technology fails. Paper and pen notes survive water damage better!
* Shelter-in-place. Can be hazard specific. Safe room on top floor in tornado alley may be a problem. Safe room in basement in flood zone or near water also a problem. How many people can fit in? What is it protecting against? How long can you stay in there? What resources will you need?
* Evacuate. Assuming it is not safe for you to remain at your current location, you need to get out of dodge. How far should you go? Where will you stay? Is there still room?

COMMON SENSE ITEMS

- Emergency/Weather Radio to keep track of updates news on hazards, find shelters, road closures, public transportation, weather changes, help and FEMA centers, etc.
- Ways to cook food and filter & treat water
- Clothes
- Sanitation (no one stops going to the bathroom during emergencies…sorry)
- Trash bags
- Cat litter. A bucket with lid and cat litter makes for a great human toilet!
- Poop bags
- Multi-tool knife
- Flashlight and extra batteries
- Can opener
- Whistle
- Human & Pet Life Jackets
- Towels. Beach towel if possible and smaller cotton towels. The large towel can be used as a stretcher (people and dogs); cut into pieces if needed to bandage or wrap things together; to carry & wrap pets & small infants, to cool someone (or pet) suffering from heatstroke (that’s when the skills of first aid class come into play); to warm up/as blanket; as a towel, bandanna, or to wave at helicopters or rescuers, etc. Get your MacGyver on!
- Pet Carriers of puppy course! 1 per pet even if they get along fine during non emergency times. It’s at the discretion of the emergency animal shelters to keep them together or separate them. Should one of the pets get sick or injured it will be better off alone (for its safety and the health of other pet).
- Always keep paper and electronic copies of the following information, preferably in a resealable bag:

... Paper maps of your neighborhood, town, county as well as regional maps.
... Veterinary and immunization records
... Pictures of owner(s) with pet(s) for proof of ownership

Once a pet emergency management plan is made, practice the plan with your family, considering multiple hazard scenarios and giving yourself various time frames to evacuate.
A non-rehearsed plan is a BAD plan! You will learn so much about your stress management and criticality assessments skills, that of your family and friends, pets will do their part – assured; and will keep you from making assumptions - your actual worst enemy!

Donation of 60 life-saving kits will help county save pets’ lives after emergencies

HERNDON, Va. (Oct. 19, 2011) – The Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service (M.C.F.R.S.) is getting new tools in its emergency response arsenal thanks to some pet product companies.
Wag’N Enterprises, Invisible Fence Brand of Montgomery County and Invisible Fence Brand of Maryland have teamed up to donate 60 pet oxygen mask kits to M.C.F.R.S. on Oct. 26. The $4,200 donation has been made possible through a combined effort of Wag’N’s O2 Fur Life® program and Invisible Fence® Brand’s Project Breathe initiative.
“The goal of both our programs is to place these life-saving pet oxygen masks in the hands of first responders throughout North America,” said Ines de Pablo, Wag’N’s executive director of Pet Emergency Management Division. “Too many animals get injured and die every year due to preventable fire related emergencies. Incident mitigation combined with pet oxygen mask kits can help save countless pet lives.”
Pet oxygen masks work similarly to those used on humans, de Pablo said. The kits contain three different sizes of masks that can accommodate different sizes of animals – everything from a ferret to a foal – in addition to three oxygen tubes and instructional materials. De Pablo said both companies receive numerous requests annually for kit donations; however, the M.C.F.R.S. donation was especially poignant. In December 2010, Montgomery County resident Laurie White lost her home in a fire, but her life and those of her pets were saved by first responders from M.C.F.R.S. To thank them, White donated two kits to M.C.F.R.S. Station 31, and the discussion began on how the county could obtain additional kits.
Now, through Wag’N and Invisible Fence® Brand’s donation, all 36 Montgomery County stations will have kits to help pet parents like White during an emergency. De Pablo said she is very happy to include M.C.F.R.S. among the more than 3,000 North American first responder departments that have received kits in through the Wag’N and Invisible Fence programs.

HERNDON, Va. (Oct. 06, 2011) – A Virginia-based pet safety company is making it easier for first responders to keep pets safe during October.

Wag’N Enterprises’ O2 Fur Life® program provides first responders a channel to order life-saving pet oxygen kits. Throughout October, the company and kit-manufacturer McCulloch Medical are offering free shipping in observance of National Fire Safety Awareness Month.

“The goal of O2 Fur Life is to get all first responders in North America to carry pet oxygen mask kits to help distressed pets after an emergency,” Ines de Pablo, Wag’N’s executive director of Pet Emergency Management Division, said. “McCulloch Medical generously offered to cover all shipping costs for first responder, direct and sponsor O2 Fur Life orders placed between Oct. 1 and Oct. 31. This is a great way to save pets and money.”

O2 Fur Life was created by de Pablo in 2008 when she realized that aftercare of pets rescued from emergencies, such as fires, was something that most first responders weren’t equipped to handle. Most humans require oxygen after an emergency, and pets are no different, de Pablo said.

Now, de Pablo’s work has placed 2,460 life-saving pet oxygen kits in more than 1,050 first responder departments in the United States and Canada.

ABOUT THE DALMATIANS 4 LIFE PROJECT

This project was initiated by Mr Richard-Lee Wilson and Mr. Thomas Hopkins in memory of their Dalmatian "Koochie". The initial project funds to get pet oxygen mask kits to the Capell and Pope Valley Fire stations stations were raised by Mr Wilson through the sale of his hand crafted cards featuring "Koochie" (see below).

The initial goal of the Dalmatians 4 Life Project is to get at least 1 pet oxygen mask kit per station. The project launched Tuesday October 25, 2011 with the sponsorship of 1 pet oxygen mask kit for the Capell Volunteer Station and 1 kit for the Pope Valley Volunteer Station. Seven more stations are looking for sponsorship to accomplish the initial goal.
The ultimate goal is to get 1 pet oxygen mask kit per truck. So lets get started!

Information about the County of Napa Fire Department
The County of Napa contracts with the California Department of Forestry (CAL FIRE) for fire protection services as the Napa County Fire Department. CAL FIRE provides administrative support and coordination with six full-time paid stations and nine volunteer fire companies.The CAL FIRE Sonoma-Lake-Napa Unit Chief serves as the Napa County Fire Chief and is responsible for the direction and coordination of fire protection services by these organizations on a Countywide basis. The County contracts with the cities of St. Helena and Calistoga, and Schell-Vista Fire Protection District for the provision of fire protection services to specified unincorporated areas adjoining these agencies. The Napa County Fire Department provides fire and emergency service dispatching for the American Canyon Fire Protection District, City of St. Helena, Calistoga and Napa State Hospital Fire Departments. The Town of Yountville and the California Veterans Home contracts with the County to provide fire services to those jurisdictions.

On Wednesday, May 18, 2011 the students from the Andes Central School CROP* Program entertained some VIP fire chiefs from the 30 Delaware County Fire Departments and the Delaware County EMS Coordinator Richard Bell. The celebration with students, parents, friends and fire chiefs was a culminating event for a service-learning project that the CROP students have been working on since November.

Over $2000.00 was raised to purchase special Pet Oxygen Masks to be used on animals that are exposed to smoke during house fires. The campaign was launched with a $500 “Learn and Serve America grant from the DCMO BOCES. Matching grants from the O’Connor Foundation and the German American Club of the Northern Catskills were acquired. The 40 CROP students raised the additional money by selling dog treats, cards and containers of snack mix during the holidays and collecting donations.

What began, as a modest project to equip the fire departments from Andes, Bovina, Delhi and Margaretville with a kit from Wag ‘N Enterprises quickly became something much larger in scale. With the $2000+ dollars, the Andes CROP Program was able to purchase kits for every fire department in Delaware County plus 2 additional kits for the Delaware County Emergency Response Trailer.

Wag'N wants to thank all the awesome volunteers, all the very generous pet parents that came to get their furry pals washed, Bark'N Bubbles Dog Wash for making this wash a success as well as photographers from the Reston Patch and the Fairfax County Times for their interest in this story. The Charity Dog Wash took place on Saturday May 14 at the Bark'N Bubbles Dog Wash in Herndon, VA! It was such a WAG!

Altogether we were able to raise $410 which should cover 6 pet oxygen mask kits. That's another 49 kits to go to reach our goal of getting 55 kits for Montgomery County. Guest Post: Update on the PVD Pet Oxygen Mask Project

When we first started the PVD Pet Oxygen Mask Project I told Ines, owner of Wag’N Enterprises Inc., that my goal was to outfit the entire Providence, RI Fire Department with pet Oxygen Masks by the end of 2011. She encouraged me to shorten my goal to the end of 2010, a mere four months away from the time I was just starting to consider the project. I thought that was a pretty lofty goal. I thought I’d come close, but really didn’t think I’d be able to make it become a reality. Sure enough though, with the help of many truly wonderful people, we did it! (Albeit down to the wire - on New Year’s Eve we received generous donation for the last three kits needed!) From August to December we raised enough funds to outfit every fire department rig in Providence with these life saving devices.
I’m so thrilled and thankful to have reached our goal, especially so quickly! I would love to thank the following for their support:

This project has been truly inspiring, not only because of the great people I’ve met and the generosity that has brought my first goal to fruition, but also because of the numerous success stories I’ve read in regards to the masks working the way they were designed to. Every time I read these stories, see the horror and then pure joy and relief on the owners’ faces and see how proud the fire fighters are when they are able to bring a beloved pet back from certain death it never fails to bring tears to my eyes.

GUEST POST: A STORY FROM PETSMART STORE #131

The following is a guest post based on an email we received from Ms. Baddgor today February 28. The sponsorship was made and posted under our previous blog post 'Departments That Received Pet Oxygen Masks in November 2010.' It is always heartwarming to hear that one of the pet oxygen mask kits we send out to the Wag'N world helps make a difference in a pets' life. We are thrilled and immensely grateful to hear that this department has gone above and beyond their duties to help pay for this kitten's care and help this family in need. Without further due, here is Ms. Baddgor's story:

My name is Connie Stoddard-Baddgor, I am an Area Pet Training Instructor with PetSmart at store #131 in Phoenix, AZ. In this email you will find a story accompanied by some photo’s. I think you will find this story worth reading.

A friend of mine, Jen Stultz, who is also a teacher and a Phoenix Fire Dept. Crisis Response (PFDCR)Volunteer, shared some of her experiences as a volunteer in regards to the death of pets during emergencies; fires, floods, hoarding, etc. She expressed the emotional devastation that people experience due to the loss of their family pet from these horrific situations. Many times, she explained, pets do die despite heroic efforts of the volunteers and first responders as they are not properly equipped to handle animals in need of oxygen or resuscitation. Jen asked me what I knew about pet oxygen masks, I hadn't really thought about it before...I realized through this discussion that what she was telling me could very well affect my family....I had to ask myself, how I would feel if it were one of my dogs?

With that, I told her I would do my best to help. Upon returning to my store, I spoke with the other two trainers. It was unanimous! We’d make it happen. Myself and my trainers Ricky Dennis and Allison Kinsall set about on a mission to educate as many employees as we could on the subject. The goal was to purchase as many kits as possible, donate and have them in hand by the end of 2010. From mid Oct. to Thanksgiving we’d collected donations from the employees & families of PetSmart #131. After much frustration, phone time, red tape and endless runarounds, I was finally able to locate and purchase 6 complete kits. We purchased these through the O2 Fur Life Program presented by Wagn’ Enterprises.

I was invited to the Phoenix Fire Dept. Administration building in downtown Phoenix, on Monday Feb. 7th at 6 p.m. in order to present our oxygen kits. Myself along with my dog Bohden, my two trainers and Dr. Dusty Kotter (Banfield, @ #1039) went to present the donations. We provided a power point presentation, written materials. Bohden helped demonstrate use of the oxygen masks. Dr. Kotter, was there to demonstrate how to find a pulse on an animal, explain animal CPR as well as answer medical questions the volunteers had. We gave 3 kits to the Fire Battalion Chief and 3 to the Crisis Response Team.

The donation was greatly received. I also sent a press release to the local news stations in order to bring attention to the need for this equipment. FOX 10 News came and interviewed the PFDCR coordinator, DC Ernst as well as myself. However, we have yet to see it air. We (the employees & their families of PetSmart #131) were presented with a plaque of appreciation from the Phoenix Fire Dept.

The second picture here below is a photo of the first life saved by one of our kits! It happened Feb. 19th (12 days later) during a house fire. The kitten was subsequently taken to a local vet and treated. The bill was $400. The family had lost everything and had no money to pay. The Fire Dept. took up donations amongst the local stations and paid the bill. The kitten has been reunited with it's family.

Ultimately, aside from the obvious reasons, there is another story about how change can happen.

One person shared an experience to another, who then shared it with a few more. Then a whole group became aware, educated and involved. The results: money and awareness raised, proper equipment acquired to fill a need. ...Lives Saved!...That's how change happens.

In other words the Wag'N CPR Magnet will be replaced by these new Forms.

Pet owners may not always be on scene when the rescue is made, may be overwhelmed or themselves be injured. Many scenarios will require the rescued pets and owners to be separated after the initial rescue. In most cases, following the initial application of oxygen, the animal will need transport to a veterinarian (just like we generally take a ride to the hospital after being rescued from a fire).

The 3Part AIR form lets responding units record animal rescue information.
- First Copy stays with emergency contact,
- Second copy goes to veterinarian,
- Third copy stays with first responders.

Information gathered includes but is not limited to:

Number of extricated animals,

On scene procedures,

Estimated time to exposure,

Name and address of facility animal being taken to and more.

ANIMAL INCIDENT REPORT (AIR) FORM

The veterinarian will have valuable documented information of the on-scene treatment provided to better follow-up on animal care.

Pet owners will have written documentation of what happened to their animals and where they are being taken to.

First responders records will allow departments to keep track of treatment provided for staff training and departmental records.

The Pet Rescue Notice form is a more simplified version that can be left by first responders on the scene following an animal rescue from a gas leak alarm, Carbon Monoxide (CO) Alarm and in some cases fire alarms when the owner is not present. The purpose again is help reunite pets and owners following the rescue.

* Sponsors & First Responders will be getting the Pet Rescue Notice form as a pdf link file in their electronic email receipt.
* Sponsors & First Responders will be getting two (2) free AIR forms per kit. More forms can be ordered online in packs of 25 and 50.

159 kits were provided to 62 departments in 2009

WAGN OUR TAILS OFF TO MAKE 2011 EVEN BETTER!

During 2009 we focused on awareness about the O2 Fur Life Program, securing more fund raising opportunities for departments and community groups that want to help by sponsoring local departments and most importantly, providing a support structure for the departments once they've acquired the kits. These successes were instrumental in achieving the goal we had set forth for 2010, namely getting more kits to more departments to help more pets across the continent. Lets look back at 2010:

- Wag'N Enterprises became an official North American Distributor for McCulloch Medical products.

- In October and November, Petplan pet insurance pledged to give a Wag’N pet oxygen mask kit to a fire or rescue department in need for every 100 pet rescue alerts downloaded from GoPetplan.com. Nearly 4,000 pet rescue alerts were created during this campaign, resulting in 40 donated pet oxygen mask kits. For full list see the December Blog Post here.

- Customers asked for media coverage for their donation/acquisition of the pet oxygen mask kits. Wag'N added free PR options to both the Sponsor and First Responder Online Order Pages. A product option was added asking customers if they are interested in speaking to the media regarding their sponsorship/acquisition. When customers answer YES to the request, a Media Release form is emailed to them. Upon completion and return of the said form, the Wag'N PR Team is now able to contact their local media to pitch the story to get coverage for their generous contribution/acquisition.

- Some customers still prefer to contact the media themselves. Upon request, Wag'N created a press release template. Click here to view.

- Customers asked for sample fund raising template forms. Wag'N issued and posted the following forms on the main O2 Fur Life Program Page (www.wagn4u.com/O2FurLife). See Main Fundraiser Form, Holiday Fundraiser Form and the National Fire Safety Month Fundraiser Form.

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) estimated that there are around 30,165 fire departments in the U.S. (see fact sheet here). Given the data collected by Wag'N regarding donations made by both partner and non-partner pet oxygen mask providers, we estimate that since 2007 less than 1500 departments (not the same as stations) now carry pet oxygen mask kits in the USA. For Canada, our best estimates show that less than 150 of the 756 official fire departments carry roughly 309 of these full kits.

The US Census does not account for pets however the American Pet Product Association does. This non-for-profit group conducts its annual survey on pet ownership and industry trends. According to their 2009/2010 National Pet Owners Survey, 62% of U.S. households own a pet, which equates to 71.4 millions homes...in the USA alone! That's nearly 171.1 million (171,100,000) cats & dogs considered as pets. If we add reptile, horse/equine, small animal, and bird ownership to the most common cats and dogs, that's 228.9 million (228,900,000) animals that could be rescued with the use of pet oxygen masks following a residential/office/barn fire.

So we still have some work on our hands!

Petplan pet insurance donates Wag’N pet oxygen kits, seeks other departments in need

Philadelphia, December 1, 2010 – This holiday season, fire and rescue departments across the country will receive free pet oxygen mask kits to help pets recover from smoke inhalation suffered during home fires. To date, 26 emergency responders have been selected and others are being encouraged to apply for the remaining kits. The donation by Petplan pet insurance is the result of a national campaign with Wag’N Enterprises to raise awareness of pet fire safety.

In addition to offering free rescue window alerts for pets, Petplan joined forces with Wag’N to take their ongoing safety initiative one step further. For every 100 pet rescue alerts created through November 30, Petplan pledged a Wag’N O2 Fur Life mask kit to an organization in need of this pet-saving equipment.

During the campaign, nearly 4,000 pet rescue alerts were created, yielding a donation of 40 pet oxygen kits. Fire and rescue departments interested in receiving a free oxygen mask kit should contact heroes@gopetplan.com by December 31.

In time for the holidays, pet oxygen kits will be sent to 26 fire and rescue departments in: California, Connecticut, Kansas, Kentucky, Maine, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Missouri, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Texas, and Wisconsin. Wag'N Thanksgiving Fire & Pet Safety Tips

Aaahhh the season of giving! Lets keep this entire weekend safe so you don't give away your house to flames and your pet to the emergency veterinarian!

Thanksgiving Day has more than double the number of home cooking fires than an average day according to the U.S. Fire Administration. In fact, each year more than 4,000 fires occur on Thanksgiving Day. Here are some facts outlined by the National Fire Protection Agency (NFPA) and the National Fire Incident Reporting System NFIRS:

"Thanksgiving Day fires in residential structures cause more property damage and claim more lives than residential structure fires on other days. Surprisingly, fire injuries in residences decrease on Thanksgiving Day. "Cooking is by far the leading cause of residential structure fires on Thanksgiving Day (42%), nearly double that of a normal day." "The leading factor in the ignition of residential cooking fires is food left unattended."

It’s so easy to become distracted and lose track of what’s happening in the kitchen when you are enjoying spending time with family and friends. But think of how distracting a house fire will be to your evening if enough attention is not paid to your kitchen, children and pets.

Here are some tips that will help you

Mitigate, Prepare and Respond to FIRE HAZARDS

** Keep candles out of the reach of children and pets. Guest, tails and children should not be able to easily access the candles. The candle holder should be completely noncombustible and difficult to knock over. The candle should not have combustible/flammable decorations around it.
** Get a fire extinguisher. Read the instructions and place it away from where open flames could impair access yet close enough for quick access.
** Stay in the kitchen when you are frying, grilling, or broiling food. If you must leave the kitchen for even a short period of time, turn off the stove or make sure an adult supervises the cooking.
** Cook on the back burners when possible and turn pot handles in so they don't extend over the edge of the stove.
**If you are simmering, baking, boiling, or roasting food, check it regularly, remain in the home while food is cooking, and use a timer to remind you that the stove or oven is on.
** Avoid wearing loose clothing or dangling sleeves while cooking.
** Never use a wet oven mitt, as it presents a scald danger if the moisture in the mitt is heated.
** Keep kids away from cooking areas by enforcing a "kid-free zone" of three feet around the stove.
** Keep pets away from cooking areas by enforcing a "pet-free zone" of three feet around the stove.
** Keep anything that can catch on fire—pot holders, wooden utensils, paper or plastic bags, food packaging, and towels or curtains—away from your stove top and oven or any other appliance in the kitchen that generates heat.
** Always keep an oven mitt and lid nearby when you're cooking. If a small grease fire starts in a pan, put on an oven mitt and smother the flames by carefully sliding the lid over the pan. Turn off the burner. Don't remove the lid until it is completely cool. DO NOT walk about the residence or kitchen with the burning pan "to bring it outside" as travel will add oxygen to the fire and risking to spark other items on your way out. DO NOT add water! ** If you must use a turkey fryer, make sure it is outdoors and in an open area away from all walls, fences or other structures that could catch on fire and away from moisture that can cause serious burns from steam or splattering hot oil. Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions. "The deep fryer can easily lead to an immediate burst of flames when a frozen turkey is dropped into hot oil. The fryer can tip over and cause a fire, or the steam from the frozen turkey could expand, pushing hot oil out of the device and starting a fire" Orem Fire Marshal Bret Larsen said
**Smoke alarms save lives. You should have replaced the batteries the night of Halloween. If you haven't, make sure you get that done before all the cooking starts. Install a smoke alarm near your kitchen and use the test button to check it each month.
** Whether you have a gas fire place or a real fire place make sure to install a carbon monoxide detector. Most carbon monoxide problems occur with chimneys, fireplaces and furnaces because of improper exhausting of fumes. Such problems are almost entirely avoidable through regular professional chimney inspection.

PREVENTING CHILDREN & PET BURNS

Maintain a No Child No Pet Policy in the Kitchen!

With all the excitement, amazing smells tickling their fancy and the curious of both children and pets keeping them out of the way will mitigate many incidents. Pets & children can cause you to trip while holding heavy hot food. Pets may also be tempted to jump on counters which may lead to burns as they may plunge paws on hot stove tops/burners and in some cases may singe fur and lead to burns on other body parts. Kids may feel the temped to open ovens, pulls pans with hot food, oil and/or grease off the stove tops to take an extra look and cause severe facial burns. And at the risk of sounding repetitive, keep kids and pets away from candles!!

THANKSGIVING PET HAZARDS

By keeping your pet’s routine unchallenged you will be able to mitigate the most common Thanksgiving emergency veterinarian visits. Feed your pet before the big family meal and away from guests to reduce stress and disturbance. Holidays are no time to make sudden dietary changes. Avoid feeding your pet rich, fatty foods (turkey skins, gravy, etc,) as they can contribute to pancreatitis. This inflammation of the digestive gland is painful and can be serious-requiring emergency veterinary assistance. Never feed your dog cooked bones – no exception for wish bones - as they can splinter and cause tears or obstruction in your pet's digestive tract leading to internal bleeding.

Additional pet hazards include:
- Baking/meat strings,
- onions found in your stuffing (may lead to anemia if consumed by dogs),
- grapes and raisins (can lead to kidney failure),
- sage and essential oils,
- tin foil,
- cellophane candy wrappers,
- toothpicks,
- coffee and coffee grind,
- alcohol,
- Xylitol sweetener (see below),
- sweets and of course,
- chocolate (see below).

Raw bread dough may lead to Gastric Dilation Volvulus (GDV) which is the second leading killer of dogs after cancer. When heated by the pet’s body temperature the raw dough will rise and swell, leading to its rotation then twisting at the esophagus and upper intestine. The twisting traps air and food obstructing veins in the abdomen leading to low blood pressure, shock and death within a few hours. As a general rule, avoid all exercise an hour after feeding anything to your pet. Raw dough is a No No year round!

Wag’N cautions that open doors will provide for escape routes. Wag’N recommends pets are kept in an enclosed room away from the racket, crated, or in a dog pen hindering access to the home’s main entrance. Whether the pet goes out or stays confined at home there will be many chances for it to run off or try to! All pets should wear up-to-date pet tags and be micro chipped before guests start showing up. If for any reason the pet escapes and gets lost, a collar and tags and/or a microchip can increase the chances the pet will be swiftly reunited with its family.

Doggy Room. It is important that your pet has a quite place to get a time out or take a nap away from holiday guest, friends & family. Perhaps, your dog has a crate or you place your dog or cat bed in his own personal suite with a sign that says “Do Not Disturb”. Train your guests to your household rules.

Children and adults in your household should be reminded of how dangerous candy and chocolate can be to pets. Bromamine, found in chocolate is extremely toxic to dogs. Leaving unsupervised pets with chew toys such as raw hides, bones, pig ears and greenies is not recommended as pets may choke on them and the lack of supervision may be deadly to the pet. Wag'N recommends to leave them instead with a chew like Kong, natural deer or elk antler chews, or himalayan dog chew (hard cheese).

Candies containing the artificial sweetener Xylitol can be poisonous to dogs. Even small amounts of Xylitol sweetener can cause a sudden drop in blood sugar, leading to lack of coordination, seizures, low blood sugar and liver failure within hours. Xylitol is found in candy and gum.

Wag'N highly recommends pet parents keep important life saving phone numbers both in their cell phone registry and displayed on paper copy in a prominent well traveled area of the residence. Important numbers include their emergency veterinarian's phone number, the ASPCA Poison Control Center Number (888) 426-4435 and the Regular Poison Control Number (800) 222-1222.

PRESS RELEASE - Thirty Two Pet Oxygen Masks Donated in October, More Scheduled for November

Herndon, VA—November 2, 2010— Pets across the U.S. can breathe easier with the news that a minimum of thirty two first responder teams will receive special pet oxygen masks thanks to a nationwide campaign sponsored by Petplan pet insurance in partnership with Wag’N Enterprises.

The campaign, which continues to run until November 30th, provides pet owners with free rescue window alerts and notifies first responders of family pets and where pets might hide during actual fire-related emergencies. For every 100 pet rescue alerts created during the months of October and November, a Wag’N O2 Fur Life Pet Oxygen Mask Kit will be donated by Petplan to a U.S. fire, police, EMS or K-9 rescue team in need. At the date of this release a total of 3,247 alerts have been created, ensuring that thirty two U.S. first responder teams will receive the necessary equipment to increase their potential to save pets suffering from smoke inhalation.

On October 1, 2010, pet parents began uploading pictures of their pets on Petplan’s website www.gopetplan.com/firesafety to create their free, personalized pet rescue alert. Petplan offers the only window alert that can be customized to feature a loved pet’s photo, name, and potential hiding spots to help expedite rescue.

Pet fire safety materials free to pet owners and fire departments

PHILADELPHIA, Sept. 28 - In honor of "October is National Fire Safety Month," Petplan pet insurance and Wag'N Enterprises pet safety gear are joining forces to offer free rescue window alerts for dogs and cats. According to the National Volunteer Fire Council, an estimated 500,000 pets are affected by home fires each year. Motivated by fire-related injury claims, Petplan launched their pet rescue window alert campaign in 2008 to help save more pets in emergencies.

"Pets often hide during fires. Knowing the pet's name or where they might be located can be helpful. Pet rescue alerts need to be kept up to date for the safety of family pets and our firefighters," cautions Lt. Kevin Grogan of the Eastchester Fire Department in New York.

Locating a pet in a fire is only the first step. Saving the pet's life is another.

"Pet oxygen masks are crucial at the scene of a fire to prevent the harmful effects of smoke inhalation. The access to oxygen can mean the difference of life and death for a pet," advises Dr. Ernie Ward of Seaside Animal Care in North Carolina.

Most fire stations are not equipped with pet oxygen masks to assist animals in medical distress. Chanel, a Yorkshire terrier, barely survived smoke inhalation and carbon monoxide poisoning from a house fire in Pennsylvania. A pet insurance subscriber, Chanel's guardian was reimbursed over $1,100 for her emergency veterinary care by Petplan.

Area fire departments receive masks to help injured pets.

Seven Southeastern Columbiana County fire departments are now equipped with pet oxygen mask kits, thanks to an outpouring of financial donations from compassionate community members.

With the exception of the Glenmoor Volunteer Fire Department, six fire departments now have pet oxygen mask kits for the first time.
Bill Bennett, Glenmoor firefighter, said the department has been equipped with the kits for three years, and has thankfully not needed to use them.
Departments with new kits are Dixonville and LaCroft, Calcutta, East Liverpool, and both paid and volunteer Wellsville departments.
The six departments started getting the kits earlier this year, mainly because of a situation that occurred in East Liverpool.
On April 28, a kennel fire occurred on Eutaw Street. Four dogs died in the blaze, but one dog was saved because of the quick thinking of East Liverpool firefighter Bob Smith, who used his own oxygen mask to resuscitate the ailing dog.
Bob Smith admitted he was afraid to put the mask on the dog at first because it was an 120-pound American Bulldog. He quickly fixed the mask on the dog's snout after he realized it didn't have enough energy to attack him even if it wanted to.
The dog was able to stand up nearly 20 minutes later, he said.
It was after the kennel fire that an East Liverpool Civil Service Commission member started looking into purchasing the pet oxygen kits for the department.
The commission member donated one set to the department and began requesting donations from city hall officials for additional sets.
The commission member, who did not wish to be named, said nearly $200 in donations were raised through the request and a total of four sets were donated to the city fire department.
A similar situation happened in Glenmoor in 2005, Bill Bennett said.
The department responded to a fire near Third and Cornell streets, and a dog was found that was struggling from smoke inhalation. A human oxygen mask was used to revive that dog as well, he said.
"(These kits) would have been a plus to use over a regular 02 mask, because it was a rather large dog," he said, adding that later the Telephone Pioneers of America donated kits to the department.
Since the donation, the department has not needed to use the masks, however.
"We've been lucky," he said.

At a June 28 township meeting, Liverpool Township Fire Chief Mike Bahen announced the department would start looking into purchasing the kits.
He said the department was receiving numerous calls from area residents wondering when the masks would be ordered.
Over time donations started pouring in for the kits.
"It got to be so overwhelming ... that's why I went ahead and got them for everybody," Bahen said, estimating that nearly $350 to $400 came in for the kits.
He also said he knew of a business in Calcutta that wanted the Calcutta department to have the kits, so he contacted Calcutta Fire Chief Scott Smith to let him know money was available for their purchase.
Scott Smith said an area woman already approached him about the kits because of what happened on Eutaw Street.
"She was interested in getting them for us because she has pets of her own," he said. "It shows people are interested in them when they are offering to try to raise donations to get them for you."
Bahen also contacted the Wellsville fire departments to let them know kits would be available.
Each pet oxygen mask kit comes with small, medium and large masks that can be used to revive dogs, cats, ferrets, rabbits, Guinea pigs and even birds. A set - with padded case included - costs $70, plus shipping.
Because a pharmacological license is required for their use, the kits are stored on fire engines and accompanying paramedics administer oxygen to animals when necessary.
Members of each department met at the East Liverpool Fire Station Thursday to show their appreciation for the donations.
Those each department wished to thank were, Telephone Pioneers of America, Gold Pond Pet Camp, of Calcutta, Farr Hill Mobile Home Park Inc., of Wellsville, and Elizabeth Bunnell, of East Liverpool, as well as others who did not wish to be named.
Kits were purchased from Wag'N Enterprises, LLC, of Virginia. According to a Wag'N Enterprises press release, the company was launched in 2008, and has since provided more than 125 fire departments in the US and Canada with the pet oxygen masks.
"We're quickly finding out just how great of a need this this," Ines de Pablo, Chief Wag'N Officer, said in the release. "We were shocked to find that most fire departments aren't equipped to save your pet's life in an emergency."

MIDDLEBORO —A fire can destroy a home in the space of a night, turning a lifetime of memories into ash. Family pets too can be taken, trapped inside of a burning house. However, a recent donation to the Middleboro and Lakeville fire departments will give some pets a fighting chance.

Pet oxygen masks work a lot like their human equivalents, helping get oxygen to someone who may be having trouble breathing because they inhaled too much smoke or carbon dioxide. In a fire, most deaths are caused by inhaling smoke or toxic gasses, so getting pure air to the afflicted can be life or death in an emergency.

"It's just a little different shape to fit a snout," Middleboro Fire Chief Lance Benjamino said.

That shape is important for getting a good fit over a pet's nose and mouth according to Wag'N Enterprises, which runs the 02 Fur Life Program that helps provide masks and training for first responders and pet owners. The principles of operation are the same, so firefighters already familiar with masks for humans don't need much additional instruction.

Since its inception in 2008, the O2 Fur Life Program has provided more than 190 Fire Departments across the United States and Canada with oxygen masks and "Pet Oxygen Masks on Board" decals for their stations and vehicles. "We're quickly finding out just how great of a need this is," explains Ines de Pablo, Chief Wag'N Officer. "Dryer fires, furnace fires, pets knocking candles over with their tails, you name it, fires are started because of it. We were shocked to find that most fire departments aren't equipped to save your pet's life in an emergency. These pet oxygen masks can be used on dogs, cats, ferrets, birds, hamsters, alpacas, wolves and many more species."

Money for the pet oxygen masks was provided by Lakeville-based K. Trucking & Sons Inc.

To keep firefighters from having to use the mask, there are a few pet fire safety tips you should follow according to the American Kennel Club.

First, you should include pets in your emergency planning and include them in any rehearsals. Know where your pets are at different times during the day and the best way to get them out. Also consider where your pet will stay if your house is uninhabitable after a fire. Also, have a disaster kit for your pet with a supply of food, treats, water, medical records and addition identification.

Second, consider giving your pet a way to escape on its own like a pet door leading to the outside. Many animals also perish in fires because they are kept in crates or cages at night, so consider alternate arrangements where possible. If a pet must be kept confined, a sticker in a window indicating that a pet is inside will inform first responders to be on the lookout for pets.

Finally, the best protection for your pet is to follow general fire safety guidelines. Make sure your smoke detectors are working, do not leave any open flames unattended and regularly review and rehearse your emergency plan. Keep in mind that you can't be there for your pet if you can't get to safety yourself. Chief Benjamino notes that many people can become trapped or injured in fires looking for their animals in a panic.

"Obviously our first priority is to get the people to safety," he said.

For many pet owners, it can be a hard calculation to accept. Pets are often considered members of the family and not doing everything you can to help them is hard. But the best thing you can do is tell the first responders about the pet and where it might be. While the first priority will always be human safety, firefighters can't rescue what they don't know about.

In addition to pet oxygen masks, Chief Benjamino said that the department was looking at purchasing a special harness for rescuing horses. In the past few years there have been several incidents in Plymouth County where horses were trapped in fires, to rescue the trapped horse takes specialized equipment and can add hours to a response while special equipment is brought in and then set up.

Five Cats Resuscitated with Pet Oxygen Masks

A recent house fire in Lakeland, TN, resulted in the loss of feline lives, but 5 cats and 1 dog were resuscitated by pet oxygen masks which had been donated to the fire department. Here’s the story:

LAKELAND, Tenn. – Pet oxygen mask helped save five cats and one dog in a Lakeland house fire. 14 other cats died after the fire broke out Tuesday morning.
“The cats, by all outward appearances, appeared to have died,” said Firefighter Brent Perkins.
The pet oxygen masks were bought a year and a half ago, as part of a grant from a local businessman who specializes in pet waste removal and thought they would be an important addition to the fire department.
This was the first time Shelby county firefighters used them and while some were skeptical, they aren’t any more. Tuesday, firefighters battling a fire at the home, found almost two dozen cats inside, balled up, near the front door.
“To hear them saying “there’s another one coming out” is something that catches your attention on a higher level,” said Perkins.
Firefighters grabbed pet masks, stored on every truck. Like human oxygen masks, they allowed firefighters to give oxygen to the cats. Neighbor Carey Hoskins watched from across the street.

“The first cat they brought out, three EMTs rushed to it, put oxygen masks on it. They treated it as if it were a child you know. It was amazing to see,” said Hoskins.

“There was so much smoke in there firefighters did not think any of them would come back and sure enough they started to, it was amazing. They came right back, eyes opened, they began to purr, the meowing started and it was absolutely incredible,” said Perkins.
14 cats died but 5 cats were resuscitated including a particularly frisky one.
“As he came to, began to get some sense, re-orientate himself and decided he no longer wanted to be there, so he’s AWOL right now. As I understand it, neighbors are still looking for him,” said Perkins.
A dog was also saved. Some firefighters admit they were skeptical the masks would work.
“Like I said, I’m a believer theses are wonderful devices,” said Perkins.
Despite the number of cats inside, neighbors say the family who lived here, were actually trying to decrease the cat population.
“We have an over population. They capture them in a special cage and take them to their vet and get them spade and neutered to try to decrease the population,” said Hoskins.
Perkins said, the homeowners could have come back to a complete loss, but they didn’t.
“I don’t care if it’s a person or animal our firefighters performed heroic measures knowing a life had to be saved. I’m proud of them, every last one of them,” said Perkins.
The homeowners were not home at the time of the fire and a cause has not yet been determined. Two firefighters were transported for heat exhaustion but they along with the surviving animals, are expected to be just fine.

Munford resident Darrell Bright says his two dogs are like children to him.
So when Bright and his wife heard that Shelby County firefighters were able to resuscitate seven animals with pet oxygen masks in a June 29 fire, they decided to donate similar masks to the Munford Fire Department.

"If the house burned down, it would be bad. But if we lost the dogs, it would be a tragedy," said Bright, a computer programmer.

The Brights bought three pet oxygen mask kits from Wag'N Enterprises, which sells emergency management products for pets. Since 2008, Wag'N Enterprises' O2 Fur Life Program has provided more than 190 American and Canadian fire departments with pet oxygen masks. The $65 kit includes three oxygen-mask sizes, oxygen tubes, a carry bag and an instructional DVD.

Munford Fire Chief J.R. Bonson said the pet oxygen masks work just like those for humans. The masks cover the animal's snout and direct oxygen flow, said Bonson. The masks can be used on dogs, cats, ferrets, birds, hamsters, alpacas and wolves, according to the Wag'N website.
Since occurrences of pet smoke inhalation are relatively rare, smaller fire departments usually do not carry the masks, said Bonson.

"Smaller departments like ourselves are strapped on funds to begin with, and that type of thing would be considered more of a luxury item for us," said Bonson.

He said the masks will help the Munford Fire Department enhance its save rate for animals.
"When you're trying to get out of the house, get in touch with Fido, too," said Bonson, who warned that pet owners should not endanger themselves in the process.

The Brights said they hope to donate more pet oxygen masks.
"If I can save one person's pet, then it's worth every dime," said Bright.
